Emergency services were called to the crash, between a car and a ute, about 7am, Senior Sergeant Al Dickie, of Dunedin, said.

The sole occupant of a black sedan travelling south, a 20-year-old female from Milton, was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital in a critical condition.

The sole occupant of the north-bound ute, a man in his 50s from Balclutha, was also taken to Dunedin Hospital, with moderate injuries.

The woman was initially trapped, but was extracted by Milton fire brigade members.

It appeared the sedan had crossed the centre-line. The serious crash unit was at the scene.

The highway was closed for a period, but has now reopened.
