Crown Range open, chains advised

The Crown Range road is open after earlier being closed because of snow.

Drivers are advised to carry chains and to be prepared to fit them as conditions can change rapidly at high altitude. For those without change, there is an alternative route via Cromwell on SH6.

Earlier today a police spokesman said NZTA was closing the road over the range between Queenstown and Wanaka about 4.30pm today.

In a statement, police said "a number of" vehicles had become stuck in the snow this afternoon but there had been no injuries.

MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said snow began falling on the Crown Range about 3pm.

The temperature on Lindis Pass dropped to -0.3degC at 3pm, she said.

On social media, people had been talking about snow settling to about 600m around Queenstown about 3pm.

People were reporting sleet in Dunedin, she said.

Heavy rain is expected to hit parts of the South today, bringing the possibility of surface flooding.

MetService warned this morning that heavy rain was expected in Dunedin and in Clutha within 20km of the coast, with 50mm to 60mm falling in the 18 hours from 3pm today.

A second period of "significant" rain could arrive tomorrow night.

In Southland, rain is expected to become persistent this afternoon with heavy falls.

In the 24 hours from noon today, 100mm to 120mm of rain is expected about the ranges, with 50mm to 60mm falling elsewhere.

Forecasters warned that streams and rivers could rise rapidly and surface flooding was possible.

Severe southwest gales are possible about exposed parts of Clutha, Dunedin and Eastern Southland, especially in coastal areas, forecasters said.

Winds are expected to ease from this afternoon, but another period of severe southwest gales is possible in these areas tomorrow afternoon and evening.
