A police officer attended an incident after a woman was hit by a bus in Dunedin yesterday.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said the woman, aged in her 40s, was moderately injured in the crash at Maori Hill.

The woman was taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department.

The ambulance was called to the corner of Grater St and Balmacewen Rd at 6.42am, he said.

In a statement, police said the woman was hit by a bus but declined to comment any further on the investigation yesterday.

Go Bus operations director Nigel Piper, of Christchurch, said the bus driver was "shaken'' but unhurt.

The Dunedin man had more than 30 years' driving experience.

The driver would return to work on Friday, he said.

Police had not provided Go Bus with any details on the crash, Mr Piper said.
