Council working on Port Chalmers leak

The Dunedin City Council plans to assess the Port Chalmers water leak today.

Port Chalmers residents have been asked to conserve water after a submerged valve malfunctioned causing 700 - 800cu m of water to leak from the reservoirs in Sawyers Bay.

Council network and catchment manager Mike Perkins said they were able to stop the flow of water caused by a submerged valve by using a pressure reducing valve further up the line.

Mr Perkins said the broken valve was "not looking too happy" and was waiting for a condition assessment he hopes will be completed today.

After the condition assessment council would have a likely timeframe for what needs to be done, he said.

The reservoir water levels were being maintained at around 60%, which was adequate for the community's needs, he said.

Mr Perkins wanted to encourage residents to continue to conserve water by halving their shower times and not leaving the taps running while they brushed their teeth.

Sixty percent was good, but more water was a better cushion and did not want to see it going down to 40%, he said.

Port Chalmers Community Board chairman Steve Walker said the call to conserve water came at a time when people were hopefully not watering gardens, washing cars and windows.
