Dunedin police are asking the public to help identify a man they say made inappropriate comments to a Fairfield School pupil on Friday afternoon.

The man is described as a Caucasian aged between 20 and 30 years old who is clean shaven and has dark hair. His hairstyle is described as being shaven at the sides and longer on top.

He was driving a light blue four-door hatchback with black seats, or seat covers, and it appeared the windows were wind up, rather than electric.

Police would "have a presence"around the school in the coming days and want other pupils approached by anyone suspicious to tell a parent or teacher as soon as possible.

Police asked parents remind their children how to stay safe while travelling to and from school, and what to do if they are approached by someone who makes them feel uncomfortable.

"You may wish to encourage them to walk to school in pairs or groups when possible."

Fairfield School warned parents to be vigilant after reports of the man, saying he was reported to be seen several times driving in the area of Main Rd, Martin Rd and Fairplay St.

A Facebook posting indicated the school advised the man had pulled over and asked for directions from a Fairfield child before making a sexual comment.

The child had been able to "avoid the situation by following stranger danger rules''.

Parents were asked to remain vigilant.
