The top dozen secondary school bands in Otago and Southland emerged from the heats of the annual Smokefreerockquest at the weekend and set their sights on the regional final in Dunedin early next month.

During May and June about 700 bands and solo/duos across the country are going through regional heats and finals in 20 centres. Levi Dick, of James Hargest College, Invercargill, and Joshua Larkins, of King's High School, Dunedin, won first and second prizes respectively in the regional solo/duo section of Saturday's competition, which was held at Kavanagh College.

The two solo/duos will now submit 15 minutes of their best material for selection to play at the national finals in September.

Levi travelled from Invercargill with his music teacher from James Hargest, and said he was "actually surprised to win'', joking that he had performed a ‘‘a soppy little love song''.

He praised Joshua's performance as "pretty good''.

The 12 top acts selected at the heats will compete for the top two places and other awards at the regional final, also to be held at Kavanagh College on June 11.
