Pig carcasses dumped in dunes

The dumping of pig carcasses in the dunes of a Dunedin beach has angered nearby residents.

Yesterday, four wild pig carcasses lay rotting in the dunes at Brighton Beach. Near the carcasses was a fish bin full of decayed pig skins.

Empty vodka and lemonade cans surrounded the site of a campfire and heavy plastic, recently used for shelter, hung in trees.

The campsite is near the intersection of Brighton, Taieri Mouth and Big Stone Rds. Residents have had enough of illegal dumping by hunters.

Saddle Hill Community Board chairman Scott Weatherall said the dumping of carcasses was an "ongoing problem'' in the area. Camping in the dune area was prohibited.

He urged residents to report illegal dumping to the Dunedin City Council to stop copycat offending in the same spot.

Council parks operations manager Hamish Black said the dumping of the carcasses was "disappointing'' and contractors would clear the area as soon as possible.

A Brighton Rd resident, who did not want to be named because of fear of retribution, said the dune area looked like a "bomb site'' yesterday.

The pigs had been poorly butchered and some fillets remained on the carcasses

Taieri Mouth Rd resident Averill Barrington said many people rode horses on the dunes' tracks. The dumping was "really bad'' and those responsible should be prosecuted.

If the public saw carcasses being dumped on public land they should report the offender's vehicle registration to police.
