Police are warning drivers to be wary of sunstrike, after an 81-year-old woman drove her car over a 15m bank in Dunedin yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said the Nissan stationwagon left District Rd, in Roseneath, and rolled down a bank on to State Highway 88, about 9.30am.

"It's believed sunstrike caused the driver to miss the turn.

"It serves as a timely reminder of driving carefully in the bright conditions,'' the spokeswoman said.

The driver, who sustained a possible broken femur, was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance.

The road was closed for about 90 minutes and traffic was diverted through Roseneath.
