The hit Dunedin-made television series ZooMoo is set to make a live hometown performance.

ZooMoo creative director Ian McGee, of Dunedin, said show host David Rattenborough and 10 puppets would give their first live performance on July 16.

The puppets' television series ZooMoo Animal Friends, co-produced by NHNZ's ZooMoo Networks and state broadcaster China Central Television, was launched in China in February and had reached more than a quarter of a billion viewers.

Research revealed the show resonated most with 5-year-olds, Mr McGee said.

The series was now broadcast in 26 countries and producers were exploring more markets, such as Europe and the United States, he said.

"We want everyone in Dunedin to meet these crazy characters ...

"This is the first time the puppets have stepped out from behind the camera to meet people. It's a very exciting time.''

The performance at the University of Otago College of Education auditorium would be the final event of the New Zealand International Science Festival.

Festival tickets for more than 170 events go on sale from today.
