The exam nerves of 100 Carrington College residents were eased by the sweet smooches of kittens yesterday.

The visit by seven Animal Rescue New Zealand kittens was the latest in a series to University of Otago halls of residence during examination time.

Otago University Students Association colleges officer Bayden Harris said kitten cuddles were the perfect remedy for exam anxiety.

"We know that exam time is possibly the most stressful time for students so what better way to help than by providing kitten cuddles?''

The Cuddle Fix scheme, which began in 2014, had proven so popular the kittens now visited the University of Otago campus once a week for students to get their snuggle fix, he said.

The decision to take the kittens to halls of residence felt right because the kittens were then visiting students in their homes, he said.

"Most of the students leave their pets when they come to us.''

Animal Rescue New Zealand committee member Heather Russell said the programme was a fundraiser for the organisation, which was too new to receive official funding.

Donations raised through Cuddle Fix helped the city's stray cat population, she said.

"Students get cuddles and cats get fixed.''

On average, two cats were spayed using the money collected during a weekly Cuddle Fix on campus, she said.

All of the kittens involved in Cuddle Fix were fostered around the city, meaning more than an hour was spent collecting them from the temporary homes before each cuddle event.

Carrington College resident Hayley Yanko said she spent the day studying and the visit was a nice reward.

Carrington College deputy warden Robyn Madden

said the visit was a "fabulous initiative''.

"The sign-up sheet was full within 10 minutes of it going up.

"Obviously it is fulfilling a need.

"If you stroke a kitten you feel better.''
