Thousands of people spilled into the Octagon and crammed up the stairs of St Paul's last night to watch the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival.

Performers carrying a variety of space-themed lanterns including UFOs, stars, rockets and moons paraded with over 800 marchers through the packed area.

The heavy drums of the Mosgiel Brass Band ushered the beginning of an underwater chapter of the parade which included a giant whale and a team of children dressed as jelly fish.

Dunedin Mid Winter Carnival event manager Keir Russell estimated the crowd was about 15,000 strong.

"It is an amazing turnout," he said.

The unseasonably warm evening meant some spectators wore shorts and T-shirts for the mid-winter event.
