It was outwardly competitive and the room buzzed all night long as years 9 and 10 pupils battled to be crowned the Otago Daily Times Extra! spelling quiz champion last night.

Ultimately, the winning team settled for nothing less than perfection, scoring 100 from 100 to get the win.

The Columba College team of Georgia Francis, Khaleeda Jaafar and Sophie O'Neill wore their winners medals with pride at the conclusion of the event and said they were pleased with the win after having come second when competing on two previous occasions.

"We came in and really wanted to win,'' Khaleeda said.

Georgia said the secret to their win was having the same team for the past three years so they knew how to "work well'' together.

Every section of the quiz had challenging parts but the abbreviation section proved the toughest, Sophie said.

They had no celebration plans but were disappointed it was the last time they could participate, because the quiz was not open to pupils after year 10.

Quiz co-ordinator and Extra! editor Ivan Behrnes believed it was the first time in Otago that a team had scored 100%.

The quiz was the last of three run in the city in the past two days.

On Wednesday, teams from Opoho School and Columba College won the primary and intermediate sections respectively.
