A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said residents were worried and speculating about what might have happened.

"I just want to know if we're safe or not and the police don't tell us much,'' she said.

The victim was "friendly enough'' and she had spoken to him several times.

At the scene yesterday, Detective Andrew Henderson, of Dunedin, said he believed the victim was still alive and directed all other questions to the police media centre in Wellington.

He spoke to the concerned neighbour saying: "We've got no concern for the safety of the public.''

Police have still not confirmed the man was the victim of a home invasion but a spokeswoman said last night the man was still alive in Dunedin Hospital.

"No-one has been arrested ... at the moment,'' she said.

A Soco (scene of crime officer) team, understood to be from Christchurch, arrived about 2.30pm yesterday and the address remained cordoned off and under armed guard.

The team would continue with its scene examination today.

The alleged home invasion was the second in the past five days in the city.

On Saturday, a 25-year-old Northeast Valley woman was struck on the head with a baseball bat inside her home in Craigleith St.

Police arrested and charged a 36-year-old woman for being an accessory to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The woman will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

Police are searching for another female believed to be the primary offender.
