Pet lamb killer denied parole

A man who fatally bashed a pet lamb and then set fire to it has been denied parole following three counts of misconduct since his last parole hearing.

Jesse James Kelly (21) is serving two years, four months in prison for injuring with intent to injure and threatening to kill.

He was handed a 10-month prison sentence in October 2013 after admitting bashing to death and setting fire to Larry the Lamb in July of the same year.

At a parole board hearing on June 7 this year, board members cited "poor decisions'' while in the company of others as a concern and the fact he received two counts of misconduct while in the Drug Treatment Unit.

Misconduct by participating in a three-way phone call was also a factor in the decision.

A physiological report from June last year assessed Kelly's risk as "high''.

In hearing documents released yesterday, the board said his risk for reoffending remained "undue''.

"Parole is declined.''

Kelly and an associate stole Larry the Lamb from a neighbouring Dunedin property just after midnight on July 21, 2013.

They took it to Kelly's home and delivered it a "sustained beating'' using a wooden club.

After beating the lamb to death, the pair placed the carcass on a wheelbarrow and dumped it on the footpath of its owner's home.

They then set fire to the lamb's carcass and fled.
