Charges likely over high-speed chase

A 34-year-old man is likely to appear in the Dunedin District Court this week after a high-speed chase near Dunedin at the weekend.

The man was yet to be formally charged yesterday, but a police spokesman said he would likely face charges of dangerous driving and failing to stop after the chase on State Highway 1, near Henley, just before 3pm on Saturday.

A motorcyclist was allegedly riding at high speeds when a police officer attempted to pull him over, the spokesman said.

When the motorcyclist did not pull over the officer began to pursue.

"Due to the speed of the bike, the decision was made to abandon the pursuit for the safety of all involved,'' the spokesman said.

He could not confirm the speed at which the motorcycle was travelling.

The motorcycle was later found abandoned in Outram and police linked it to the 34-year-old, arresting him later that day, the spokesman said.
