Motorists are urged to take care in North Otago today as there is surface flooding on State Highway 83 between between Pukeuri and Kurow.

Heavy rain lashed Oamaru, North Otago and parts of East Otago, including Dunedin yesterday, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions on the highway.

The New Zealand Transport Agency has put out a caution notice again this morning for that section of the road.

Yesterday, warning signs and traffic cones were also put on the highway to alert motorists as drivers coped with water, at times about 20cm deep, flowing over the highway, including about 6km from the State Highway 1 turnoff.

MetService duty meteorologist Frances Russell said the rain, from a low pressure system, resulted in 46mm falling at one recording station in North Otago, by 7pm yesterday.

The rain, including in Dunedin, was expected to ease to showers today.

The heavy rain warning for Dunedin and parts of eastern North Otago was lifted last night.
