Cull not yet begun but gaggle down to seven

The wild goose chase in Port Chalmers continues, but now their numbers are down from eight to seven.

However, the extermination company contracted to shoot the unwanted Watson Park overstayers said it had not killed any yet.

The geese were not in their regular spot near Port Chalmers School when the Otago Daily Times visited late yesterday afternoon and instead were on the shore near Sawyers Bay.

DM Holdings owner Dave McPhee confirmed his company had been contracted to kill the birds but categorically stated "nothing has been done'' when asked if any had been killed.

He directed other questions to the Dunedin City Council, including whether pro-geese volunteers had disrupted attempts to shoot them earlier this week.

Council parks and recreation group manager Richard Saunders was not prepared to provide an update last night.

For about three hours yesterday, it was believed the geese had dodged the bullet after Port Chalmers resident Sharon Hornblow thought she had nabbed the frustrating fowls.

After enticing the "six'' geese into her yard with apples, she was informed they were a different gaggle.

"Apparently [we] caught the wrong lot,'' she said. They were the "Upper Port Six''.

Ms Hornblow said she had not lived in the area long so was unaware there were two groups.
