Work has begun on a $2.6 million project to construct a purpose-built home for the University of Otago's Dunedin Study.

Cook Brothers Construction has been awarded the contract to build new premises for the Dunedin multidisciplinary health and development research unit on a site at the corner of Union St and Anzac Ave, Dunedin.

Letting the contract and starting physical work on the site late last month capped a highly successful past few months for the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study.

The Health Research Council last month awarded the study almost $5million over five years for a life-course study on ageing.

Unit director Prof Richie Poulton, of the Otago psychology department, also recently received an HRC research excellence award, for an outstanding contribution to health research excellence.

The new two-storey building will have a 580sq m gross area.

The building will be covered mainly in vertical cedar, with cement sheet cladding.
