House and car fires 'suspicious'

Police are investigating a house fire in Te Anau and a car fire in Dunedin, both believed to be suspicious.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said two crews from Te Anau Station were called to the house fire in Howden St about 4.30am today.

The blaze in the single-storey house was "well involved" by the time they arrived, but no one was in the house, she said.

The last firefighter left the scene about 7am.

However, a "scene guard" would remain at the property until East Otago-Southland fire risk management officer Cathy Trevathan arrived later today to inspect the house.
