Two people were taken to hospital after being trapped in a utility vehicle when it rolled on the Northern Motorway.

Emergency services were called to the accident about 4km from Pigeon Flat about 10.25am on Saturday.

A Fire Service spokeswoman said the two occupants of the vehicle - a man and a woman - were trapped inside the cab of the ute and had to be cut free.

Firefighters from Willowbank and Dunedin Central were called to the scene where the ute remained on its side in a ditch.

A St John spokeswoman said the pair were taken by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital with minor injuries for a precautionary assessment, she said.

The accident was one of several attended by emergency services following a cold and icy start to the day, police said.

The temperature reached -1degC in Mosgiel, while residents of many of Dunedin's hill suburbs awoke to frost.

Alexandra recorded the coldest temperature of the main towns in the region with the mercury dropping to -5degC, while Queenstown and Wanaka recorded lows of -4degC and -2degC respectively.

The icy conditions led to several road accidents in the Southern district, a police spokesman said.

None were serious, but provided a timely reminder for motorists to be vigilant on the district's roads in the early morning, especially shaded areas, he said.

"Drive to the conditions,'' the spokesman said.

"Watch your following distance and watch your speed.''
