Elated by flooring industry award win

A Dunedin man has floored it to the top of the flooring industry by winning a national award.

Chris White was named floor planning and design trainee of the year at the annual BCITO Flooring Apprentice of the Year Awards held in Auckland.

Mr White was recognised for his outstanding results and good attitude during his training.

It felt "really good'' to win the award, but he "was not expecting it'', Mr White said.

The idea of doing a floor planning and design course was suggested to him by his employers at Dunedin Carpet Flooring Xtra shortly after he started there, he said.

He completed the 18-month course early in 2015 and has continued to work for the company.

The awards night was a "great'' one and he particularly enjoyed listening to the guest speaker, former professional league player Tawera Nikau, Mr White said.

BCITO provides apprenticeships and training for 15 different trades, and its awards nights were a "chance to celebrate all the hard work'' put in by trainees, apprentices and teachers alike, spokeswoman Caroline Brown said.

The awards nights have been running since 2007 and are the largest annual gathering of flooring industry professionals.
