Firefighters battling a large fire in a green waste pit in Dunedin are concerned wind could cause the blaze to spread.

The fire in a "massive" pit at a greenwaste dump in McLeod's Rd in Burnside was called in to the fire service at 7.45am, a Fire Service spokesman said.

Crews from four of the city's fire stations, St Kilda, Roslyn, Lookout Point and Dunedin are fighting the fire, with assistance of a tanker and crew from the Otago Rural Fire Authority.

A bulldozer was being used to break down the contents of the pit to give access for firefighters to extinguish the fire.

The main concern was that while it was not very windy at the moment, the wind would rise and the fire could spread to trees around the pit, the spokesman said.

Dunedin experienced strong winds overnight, with gusts up to 115kmh.

The strong winds also brought down a wattle tree in Anzac Park, Mosgiel.
