A female motorist was verbally abused and had her keys stolen while her young child cried in the back seat of her car during a road rage incident in North Dunedin yesterday.

Police were called to the incident in Queen St about 11.30am, a police spokeswoman said.

It is unclear what led to the outburst, but police were still looking for the alleged offender.

"A female driver in her vehicle was approached by a male, who proceeded to verbally abuse her and take her keys before driving away in his own vehicle,'' the spokeswoman said.

Police did not disclose details of the alleged offender or his vehicle, but it is understood they have identified a person of interest.

A witness said the woman's child was crying in the back seat as the man screamed at her and snatched her keys from the car.

"An angry male pulled the door open and screamed at her and abused her. He said he was 'going to kill them all','' the witness said.

The witness, who did not identify himself, said he did not see what led to the incident.

Soon after abusing the woman, the man got back into his car and drove off at speed, the witness said.

"She was getting out of the car and he pushed past her and got the keys out of the car,'' the witness said.

The visibly shaken victim did not wish to comment about the incident, but cuts were visible on her hands.

Her husband arrived at the scene shortly after and was accompanied by a police officer to retrieve a spare key for the vehicle.
