The rates increase for Dunedin stood at 7.7% after the city council's latest budget meeting, but the final figure hangs on Monday's stadium decision.

Before adjourning a budget meeting yesterday, Mayor Peter Chin said the best time to try to pluck more from the budget would be after that decision.

A finance and strategy committee meeting will be held at 9am on Monday, and an extraordinary meeting to discuss the stadium at 11am.

The final rates increase will be decided after that meeting, and the annual plan approved for public consultation.

Funding for a plan to redevelop Dunedin's harbourside with apartments, bars and cafes was deferred by the Dunedin City Council yesterday.

Following a motion by Cr Kate Wilson, $5.3 million was included for the next two years for purchase of properties, but $4.2 million for access and amenities was deferred until the 2013-14 financial year.

Cr Wilson said that would allow the money to be spent when there was less pressure on the council's budget.
