A few drops of rain did not deter hundreds of people from
taking advantage of about 50 shops staying open late last night
as a part of the iD Dunedin Fashion Week Starlight Shopping.
About 250 people queued outside Glassons womenswear store on
George St before they opened at 6.30pm for a mini-fashion
parade complete with bubbly wine for guests, a local DJ
playing music and a special 20% discount in the store for the
night.
Glassons national retail manager Linda Falwasser, of
Auckland, was pleasantly surprised by the number of people
wanting to visit the store and asked whether it was usual for
Dunedin people to queue to get intosuch retail store events.
At Dada women's clothing store on Moray Pl, owner Marie
Strauss, who is also appearing in the iD Fashion Show as a
designer, said the she was using the starlight shopping as an
opportunity to celebrate the store's first birthday.
"I didn't really think about it when I opened the store, but
opening it in fashion week last year means that every year I
can celebrate the opening during fashion week."
She had baked cakes for the event, decorated the store with
balloons and invited regular customers to come and celebrate.
The Starlight Shopping was a great event as it brought people
into the central city and often they would go to stores they
might not normally visit.
She had one visitor from out of Dunedin who came during the
Starlight Shopping and bought "heaps", she said.
Two fashion parades were held in the Meridian Mall, on George
St, with most of the mall's stores staying open late for the
event.
