Stadium: councillors get final say

Dunedin city councillors have been assured no contract will be signed with main stadium contractor Hawkins Construction until the matter goes to a vote on April 20.

Mayor Peter Chin confirmed he had sent an email giving that reassurance yesterday.

Mr Chin said he sent the email in response to an Otago Daily Times story yesterday, in which Carisbrook Stadium Trust chairman Malcolm Farry said if the trust was happy, a document could be signed - probably by Mr Chin - conditional on full acceptance by the Dunedin City Council, probably on April 20.

Cr Walls said on a website devoted to the stadium debate Mr Chin had "unequivocally confirmed" in the email he would not sign the contract ahead of the council making its decision.

Mr Chin said the council was always going to have had the final say.
