False claims in stadium letter

An attempt has been made to use the Otago Daily Times letters to the editor column to spread misinformation about the planned stadium at Awatea St.

A "letter to the editor" received this week claimed the Carisbrook Stadium Trust spent $1.5 million in March to buy audio-visual equipment from the United States.

The claim, which trust chief executive Ewan Soper said yesterday was not true, was the subject of a letter which used the address of the Queenstown branch of an audio-visual firm that has an office in Dunedin, and the name of a man who works there.

The man, who asked not to be named, said when contacted he knew nothing of the letter, and little about the stadium.

He said someone may have used details from his business card.

In 2007, more than 20 signed anti-stadium letters to the editor were received from addresses that either did not exist, or whose occupants had never heard of the supposed writer.

The latest letter, which was not published, read: "It would be considerably embarrassing for all concerned if the Awatea stadium did not go ahead, as all the audio and visual equipment for this project has been ordered direct from the manufacturer in the USA."

It claimed containers of the equipment would arrive in Dunedin by the end of the year.

Mr Soper said the claim was not correct.

The allowance for such equipment was "nowhere near $1.5 million", and would be included in the guaranteed maximum price contract that had yet been signed.

"For a lot of reasons, and in a lot of ways, this seems inappropriate," Mr Soper said.
