Lawyers to discuss next move in stadium battle

Lawyers acting for the Dunedin City Council are expected to be given the floor this morning when debate begins over the next move in the Otago stadium debate.

Late on Friday, in an 11th-hour attempt to halt stadium construction plans, the Stop The Stadium group sought a High Court injunction barring the council from signing a construction contract today.

Council chief executive Jim Harland said yesterday the court papers were in the hands of lawyers from Anderson Lloyd over the weekend and they would be present at today's confidential briefing of councillors at 9am.

Mr Harland would not comment further.

Lawyer Hillary Calvert, acting for Stop The Stadium, said the main question the lawyers would be addressing was whether the council would be taking any risk by making a decision today, as it had planned.

"I can't see any lawyer being likely to put themselves on the line in that sort of way and say . . . 'No problem, go ahead'."

The basis for the court action is that the stadium project has changed sufficiently to require the council to again consult the public through the annual plan.
