Ex-girlfriend: Bain 'zoned out'

A former girlfriend of David Bain has told a Christchurch High Court jury about an incident at a concert nine days before Bain's parents and siblings were shot.

The woman, whose identity is suppressed, described how Bain appeared to be unaware of what was happening around him during the second half of an orchestral concert on June 11, 1994.

He had become ''very quiet and still'' and ''just sat there'' during the applause at the end of the performance and she had to elbow him, the woman said.

''I told him I didn't know what had happened but he didn't say anything," she told Justice Panckhurst and the jury.

When she saw him at his aunt and uncle's home in the days after his family were killed, Bain told her there was a period on the Monday morning he could not account for.

He said he had been home about 25 minutes before he rang the police and could account for only about 5 minutes of the time.

And he told her he thought it might have been something like what had happened at the Sinfonia concert on June 11 when he ''zoned out''.

The witness was giving evidence on the 33rd day of Bain's retrial for the 1994 murders.
