Two drivers desert their crash scenes

Drivers of two cars that crashed in separate incidents early on Saturday morning both left the scene, but were tracked down within hours.

The first incident was at 12.30am, when a 19-year-old Dunedin student, "driving at speed" on Forth St towards Dundas St, lost control on a hill, crashed into a parked car on the opposite side of the road, and caused extensive damage to three other parked cars.

The driver, a male, escaped on foot, and was captured three hours later and processed for drink-driving, but Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken said by that time the result was negative.

Police were yet to determine what charges would be laid.

In the second incident, at 5am, a 26-year-old man lost control on Middleton Rd, hitting a parked car before crashing into a fence and ending up down a slight incline.

He also left the scene, but was picked up a short time later.

He was charged with driving with excess breath-alcohol, and will appear in court this week.

• Police are seeking witnesses after 23 reports of car windows smashed in a vandalism spree in Dunedin early on Saturday.

Snr Sgt Aitken said the windows were smashed, mostly with rocks, in streets from Tomahawk Rd, Andersons Bay, through South Dunedin to Ravenswood Rd in St Clair between 3am and 4am, and police had been inundated with complaints.

Because of the distances involved, it appeared a car was used, and Snr Sgt Aitken said he was keen to hear from anybody who saw vehicles cruising in the area, or could shed light on the offenders.
