Black ice causes havoc on roads

Black ice caused havoc on Dunedin roads this morning, with multiple accidents closing Wakari Road and a milk truck on its side in Kaikorai Valley.

Senior Sergeant Mel Aitken, of Dunedin, said motorists appeared to have been caught out by the conditions, and urged anyone driving to exercise extreme caution on the city's roads.

"There's been multiple crashes over the city."

Ambulances had been called to several of the accidents, but so far there had been no reports of serious injury, Snr Sgt Aitken said.

Wakari Rd, between Taieri and Gilkison Rds, was closed due to black ice, after a car ploughed into the back of a truck, and three cars were involved in a separate pile-up. It is now open.

"Treacherous conditions" on Kaikorai Valley Rd were believed to have caused a milk delivery truck to lose control and flip on to its side, she said.

Accidents had also been reported near Brighton and other locations, but - much like last month's snow storm - police had virtually given up counting minor accidents, she said.

Treacherous conditions existed in Abbotsford and southern parts of Dunedin.
