Fairfield Rd to get facelift

The former main road south of the Dunedin through the suburb of Fairfield is about to get a $40,000 facelift to visually soften "a relatively stark area".

The road lost much of its traffic when the Southern Motorway was built.

The wide road provided an excellent opportunity to rationalise traffic and pedestrian requirements and improve its appearance, Dunedin City Council strategy and development general manager Kate Styles said.

A concept plan showed the road with paving, trees, seats and plantings at the pedestrian crossing in front of Fairfield School.

The Saddle Hill Community Board had approved, in principle, a plan for enhancement, and a public meeting on the issue would be held in conjunction with a board meeting on July 30.

Work would begin in August, subject to the responses received at the meeting.

More work would be done on the road in the next few years.
