Pool reception upgrade

Dunedin's Moana Pool is soon to get a new reception area, computer system with swipe cards, and Speedo concept shop in a $300,000 upgrade.

Dunedin City Council annual plan hearings in January heard the pool lost between $50,000 and $60,000 a year from people entering without paying when staff were busy, and councillors voted to allow an authorised overspend of $300,000 for the replacement of a software system that would provide a swipe card for pool users in order to fix the problem.

The council announced yesterday Amalgamated Builders would begin the work on Monday.

Two gates would be installed, one for casual users and another for members.

They would be operated by a magnetic strip on cards.

Aquatic services manager Steve Prescott said the new computer system would streamline booking for classes, and would process membership and swim-shop sales.

The project was expected to be finished by December.
