One person arrested during the weekend the Undie 500 rally
arrived in Dunedin has been given diversion and another is
being considered for it despite police promising no-one
arrested during the disorder would get that option.
Before the Undie 500 rally, police said they would apply a
strict no diversion policy for anyone arrested during the
disorder.
Sixty-five people were charged after two nights of disorder
in Castle St following the arrival of the rally in the city
on September 11.
Dunedin area commander Inspector Dave Campbell said both
parties agreed to diversion for one 19-year-old student, who
was arrested during the general melee and charged with
obstructing police after officers could not recall which
officer had allegedly been obstructed.
"Giving a diversion was the best option in the
circumstances."
Another man applied for diversion after being charged for his
actions about 9pm on the Saturday, before the main trouble
began, but his application was rejected.
An application from a third man, who was charged after police
picked him up lying in the middle of Great King St at 2.40am
on the Saturday, was being considered.
