The icebergs which had appeared to be heading towards Otago
have disappeared, but more could be on the way.
A commercial flight yesterday to investigate satellite
positions could not find the two icebergs thought to be
within 300km of the Otago coast, National Institute of Water
and Atmospheric Research oceanographer Mike Williams said.
In 2006, icebergs close to the coast disappeared for a couple
of days before being sighted again by a fishing vessel east
of Stewart Island.
An Australian scientist believed there were still icebergs
around the Auckland and Campbell Islands to be seen on
satellite pictures, Dr Williams said.
