Scotland's "equivalent to Waitangi day" was celebrated in
Dunedin yesterday with a quiet lunch, a bit of piping and some
flag-waving.
About 30 members from the Caledonian Society, the Taieri
Scottish Society, the New Zealand Scottish Regiment, the
Otago Scottish Heritage Council and the public came together
to mark St Andrew's Day, along with the 75th anniversary of
St Andrew's Society in Otago.
Also present was Scottish national John Bain, who has been in
Dunedin since February on business.
He is to return home, to Stirling, this week.
He attended the Highland Games event on Sunday, where the
weather reminded him "of a Scottish November" and decided to
attend yesterday's lunch to meet some people and "see what
it's like".
St Andrew's Society representative Bill McCammon said "today
is Scotland's national day, equivalent to Waitangi Day".
The society was formed in 1934 and aimed to "enhance anything
Scottish" through meetings, dances and various activities.
