Triple the limit

A 47-year-old Mosgiel woman spent much of yesterday in the Dunedin Central Police Station cells sobering up after she was found driving with more than three times the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

Senior Sergeant Steve Aitken, of Dunedin, said an off-duty police officer noticed the woman "weaving all over the road", from Mosgiel to Dunedin, and called the police about 3pm.

The woman was pulled over in St Clair where she recorded a breath-alcohol reading of 1324mcg.

The legal limit for an adult is 400mcg per litre of breath.

"She's grossly intoxicated.

"She's a menace on the road to other users," he said.

"Given it's two days before Christmas and there are huge volumes of traffic around the city, it's fortunate she didn't ruin someone else's Christmas."

The woman spent last night in the cells and will appear in the Dunedin District Court today on a charge of drink-driving.
