Stolen property not yet returned

The Mosgiel volunteer firefighter targeted by thieves while on a call out is no closer to a reunion with his stolen property.

Senior firefighter Steven Turnbull arrived back at the Mosgiel fire station early on Sunday morning, having helped extinguish a burning caravan on Mure St and save a nearby house, to find his car had been targeted by thieves.

Whoever was responsible had taken a GPS navigation unit, sunglasses, migraine medication, loose change, a gym identification card and even a spare pair of socks.

They also spilled beer and spirits inside Mr Turnbull's car and left an empty bottle under one of the seats.

Yesterday, Mr Turnbull said there had been no news of his property, and "I don't really expect to see it again, to be honest".

He had spoken to his insurance company, Tower, and had been asked to fill out a list of property taken from the car - and provide proof of his purchases.

"For a fair bit of it I don't have any receipts.

"I guess I will just see how they [Tower] feel on the day."

Mr Turnbull had tried to lock his car while racing into the brigade's station when called to the fire, and was adamant he pressed his key ring lock button.

However, it failed to activate and the car was left unlocked while he attended the fire.

The property inside was covered by his contents insurance policy.

The fire Mr Turnbull attended was being treated as suspicious by police and fire safety investigators.

Fire safety inspector Stuart Ide, of Queenstown, said he was still investigating the fire, and expected to present a preliminary report to police next week.
