Dunedin man happy to return from Chile

Mike Scurr is pleased to be home after a business trip to remember.

The Waikouaiti man was in Chile on a four-day business trip for Oceana Gold when an earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck.

"It was a pretty scary experience," Mr Scurr said.

The hotel near Santiago Airport where he and former Dunedin man Stewart McSkimming had been staying was condemned after the earthquake, which left hundreds of people dead and many more missing.

The international airport was badly damaged during the earthquake, and those exiting the country left from the domestic airport.

Mr Scurr said during their trip the pair witnessed large-scale scenes of devastation in and around the Chilean capital.

It was a relief to arrive back in New Zealand, he said.

Asked if he was likely to go on another business trip to Chile Mr Scurr said, "Probably not".
