Stadium roof 'will be fine'

The roof on Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium would be able to withstand a storm similar to that experienced in Melbourne on Saturday, in which hailstones the size of lemons caused major damage.

Spokesman Guy Hedderwick said the roof, which was made of the transparent thermoplastic polymer Ethylene TetrafluoroEthylene, had been tested with a car being dropped on it, with no damage recorded.

"The roof will be fine," he said.

Speaking of extraordinary claims ....

Did you see the one the other day that told us computer modelling shows the temperature will only rise inside by a couple of degrees or so on a hot day? That'll turn out to be a bit of a laugh. I've always thought one of the unspecified uses for this 'multi-purpose unwanted rugby stadium' must surely be as a gigantic hydroponic market garden.

Not a problem

Shouldn't be a problem. I understand a large white one is available on site.

He did

They dropped a car on it. Should be sweet.

Testing the integrity of the roof.

Surely dropping an elephant would be a more appropriate test. Of course the weight, distance of the fall and the colour of the elephant would also need to be declared.

Extraordinary claim

I find this very very difficult to believe. Can Guy Hedderwick give some details on this? Is this a new way of answering objections so that you are left slack- jawed?

Can he sign his name to it?

What about the Gabba stadium roof in Queensland? It wasn't such huge forces that bowled that one over, and it's modern, now costing more on top of the huge losses the four stadiums there are incurring. They give their guartantee to keep face, once something goes wrong, they're goneburgers.
