The mystery of numbered bottle caps washing ashore at
Ocean View, Dunedin, has been solved.
Several of the caps were picked up last week by Stan and
Heather Rivett as they walked along the beach.
Organisers of the Brighton Gala Day big dig competition have
claimed ownership of the caps.
Kyla Jasperse said 500 caps were buried on a bank of Brighton
beach for last month's event, during which children who found
them won a prize.
Following the event, "90% of them" were recovered.
People searched unsuccessfully for the remaining caps for two
weeks.
She described the competition as a "simple process", but said
it might need to be modified.
Possible solutions included putting a net beneath the caps so
they could be easily retrieved.
Co-organiser Colin Weatherall asked for any recovered caps to
be returned to organisers so they could be reused next year.
