A Dunedin engineering company is towering over its
Australian opposition.
A one-of-a-kind maintenance unit built by Farra Engineering
Ltd is on its way to the top ofka new commercial building in
Sydney.
The steel unit, which took a year to design and construct,
will allow contractors to put the finishing touches to the
34-storey building in George St and will be used for cleaning
the windows of the block.
Farra Engineering chief executive John Whitaker said the
company had supplied maintenance units to the burgeoning
Sydney construction market for several years, but the latest
model was unique.
Designed to be hidden from sight when not in use, the unit
was able to climb up an incline and move along its 500m track
around the perimeter of the roof, and was also able to
navigate its cage over glass structures.
The company's design and construction expertise meant it was
able to supply most of the units for new buildings in Sydney.
It charged more than $A1 million for this maintenance unit.
The maintenance unit is expected to arrive in Sydney next
week.
