Green co-leader kayaking to spotlight dirty rivers

Water quality in the Taieri River will be highlighted by Green Party co-leader Russel Norman today as part of his dirty rivers rafting tour.

He is kayaking rivers around the country to raise public awareness about the water problems in "our own back yard".

The Taieri was rated in the bottom half of 60 sites on all three measures of river health in last year's Ministry of Environment water-quality league tables.

"Otago residents should be able to use the Taieri for recreation without having to worry about the state of the water," he said.

Pollution was responsible for the poor quality of the Taieri River.

Dr Norman will start kayaking from the Outram picnic spot on the river about noon today.
