An 18-year-old unemployed man was granted bail in the Dunedin
District Court when he appeared on Saturday for the alleged
burglary of the Blueskin General Store at Waitati, Acting
Senior Sergeant Chris McLellan said.
Simon Jack Atherton, formerly of Dunedin, was remanded on
bail without plea, to Alexandra.
Justices of the peace Denis Alexander and Tim Lau imposed a
24-hour curfew as a condition of his release.
Police opposed bail, Sgt McLellan said.
He was to reappear on Friday.
Sgt McLellan said a 17-year-old Dunedin man had also been
charged with burglary, and would appear in the Dunedin
District Court on Friday.
The pair allegedly smashed their way into the store using
sledgehammers sometime on Thursday night taking tobacco and
cigarettes.
Another two men, aged in their late teens, had also been
arrested and charged with receiving stolen tobacco, and
possession of cannabis, Sgt McLellan said.
He said further arrests were likely.
Police had recovered most of what was taken, he said.
