The 336.7kg carcass from a Limousin-cross beef beast
raised by dairy farmers Tim and Katy Button, of Port Molyneux
Dairies Ltd near Balclutha, was judged supreme champion in the
2010 Otago Southland Beef Competition last week.
The event, held at the Alliance Group's Mataura plant,
attracted 36 entries.
Animals were judged both on the hoof and on the hook.
The couple also won the class 3 section with 291 points and
the owner bred animal with highest points category, as well
as placing third in the class 1 section, with a
Limousin/Friesian cross carcass.
The winning entry was a Limousin/Belgian blue/Friesian.
"It is a big thing, to come through and win the carcass
competition," Mrs Button said.
She said although they were dairy farmers, they were always
looking at adding value to their product.
They also have the Speckle Park stud and run a few Limousins
on their dairy farm.
Allan Chisholm, of Outram, won the reserve champion title
with his Limousin, as well as first places in the class 1 and
class 2 sections.
He was also awarded second and third places in class 2 and
won the champion on hoof title.
