The Button family, from South Otago, enjoys showing good stock.

Their steer Smokey Joe, by a Limousin bull out of a Belgian Blue cross cow, was named grand champion steer on the hook in the Future Beef hoof and hook competition held as part of Beef Expo this month.

Tim and Katy Button, who farm near Kaka Point, bred the steer, which was handled by Dwayne Taylor. It was third in the crossbred steer category on the hoof, before winning the hook class, while the family's other entry Black Nitro - shown by Josh Button (13) - was third on the hook.

In the overall results, with hoof and hook combined, the steers were placed second and third in the lightweight crossbred steer category.

Mrs Button said the family was "really chuffed" with its success.

Anton and Liz Gibson, from Middlemarch, won reserve grand champion steer on the hoof and third overall in heavyweight crossbred steer section, while William Gibson was named intermediate beef ambassador.

Entries for the annual Otago-Southland beef carcass competition close on June 3. The competition is open to all beef farmers and entries will be judged on the hoof and hook.
