Waiwera South farmer wheat winner

Waiwera South farmer Craig Whiteside was thrilled to win the feed wheat class in the recent United Wheat Growers wheat-growing competition.

The competition was reintroduced this year by United Wheat Growers, with the support of the Ashburton Trading Society.

Crops harvested this year nationwide were eligible to enter the milling, feed and biscuit classes. The prizegiving was held at Federated Farmers' recent grain conference.

Mr Whiteside, who had entered the competition a few times, said the win came as "a bit of a surprise".

"It's not very often South Otago falls in the limelight for something like that," he said.

His uncle, John Whiteside, who farms on the neighbouring property, was second in the same class and also won a protein award.

Craig Whiteside has about 320ha in crop on the 500ha farm, and also does a lot of lamb finishing.
