Ferrier Agribusiness Person of Year

Fonterra chief executive Andrew Ferrier has been named 2011 Agribusiness Person of the Year.

The award, which recognises a person who has made a significant contribution to the business of agriculture through innovation, determination and leadership, was presented at a Federated Farmers awards evening in Rotorua this week.

Mr Ferrier, who announced in April he would resign later this year, took over the reins of the dairy giant nearly eight years ago and it has grown substantially during his tenure.

In 2003, Fonterra earned revenues of $11.8 billion from 1.202 billion kg of milk solids. By 2010, revenue had grown to $16.7 billion from 1.286 billion kg of milk solids.

In June 2009, Fonterra was ranked the No 1 milk processor in the world by global industry research group International Farm Comparison Network, which benchmarked 600 milk processors in more than 70 countries.

The other nominees were agKnowledge managing-director Dr Douglas Edmeades, Ballance Agri-nutrients chief executive Larry Bilodeau, New Zealand National Fieldays general manager Barry Quayle and Progressive Meats managing director Craig Hickson.

Federated Farmers earthquake spokesman John Hartnell was named Agri-Personality of the Year, recognising his leadership of the Farmy Army, which has assisted in Christchurch's earthquake recovery.
