Chance to judge stock

A junior stock-judging seminar is being held in Waimate on Sunday, October 2.

Open to any interested young people aged between 17 and 25, it will start at 9.30am at the showgrounds with registration, a brief introduction and judging demonstrations.

Participants will then judge four Romney sheep and four Southdown sheep, along with merino fleece wool in the morning.

After a barbecue lunch, there will be visits to two local farms to judge dairy cattle and beef cattle.

The event, which is organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand, was held in Waimate two years ago and attracted more than 20 young people.

While the focus was on learning, there were opportunities for the top competitors to go on further to compete, organiser Digger McCulloch said.
