Canterbury's traditional two-day sale condensed to single day

The decision to move its annual ram and ewe sale from two days in January to a single sale day this month has paid off for the Canterbury A&P Association.

With the traditional two-day sale numbers dropping, the association made the decision to condense the sale into one day on Friday, November 29.

The move has seen an increase in entries from 271 sheep for sale last year to 293 this month, made up of 280 rams and 13 ewes.

A wide range of breeds will be offered including Romney, Charollais, English Leicester, White Dorper, South Suffolk, Corriedale, Hampshire, Border Down, Poll Dorset, Perendale, Texel, South Down, Suffolk and Dorset Down.

Vendors come from throughout Canterbury and Otago, from Brightwater and Takaka and from Masterton.

The ram and ewe sale starts at 1pm, at the Canterbury Agricultural Park. Selling will be non-stop and the sale is estimated to take between six and seven hours to complete.

The auctioneers will be representatives of PGG Wrightson Ltd and Rural Livestock Ltd.
